Legitimate businesses advertise on social media. Scammers do, too.

Louisiana treasurer John M. Schroder is warning social media users about “unclaimed compensation” scams, and online advertising that may be misconstrued as Louisiana Unclaimed Property.

Every year, more than a billion dollars in unclaimed refunds, security deposits, uncashed paychecks, and other property get turned into the state treasury. One in six Louisiana residents has unclaimed property. The state does not advertise this on social media. Responding to one of these ads could expose you to identity theft.

To check whether you have unclaimed property, go to MissingMoney.com, or LaCashClaim.org.
